Simpler Recycling Legislation………What is it?
This year, the government are implementing a new legislation that will simplify the way we recycle as a country and make recycling more straight forward for everyone.
Currently, businesses and households can have up to 7 different bins, which places unnecessary burden on people and businesses.
By simplifying the rules, it will make recycling easier for people in England, while stimulating growth and maximising environmental benefits.
Key points that the new legislation is looking to achieve are:
- Simplify what CAN and CAN’T be recycled, both at work and at home.
- Improve recycling rates.
- Protect the Environment, by tackling illegal waste.
What will your business need to do?
The new Simpler Recycling legislation will require businesses, schools, hospitals and other ‘non-household municipal premises to segregate its dry recycling (paper, card, plastic packaging, glass and metal) from its general waste and organise the relevant collections.
As well as dry recycling, businesses will be required to segregate any amount of food waste, regardless of volume, and also arrange a separate collection. Materials that are required to be separated from general waste.

When will these changes happen?
Workplaces with 10 fulltime equivalent employees, or more will need to be compliant by March 31st 2025
Micro-firms (businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees) will be temporarily exempt from this requirement and will need to be compliant by March 31st 2027
