Digital Waste Tracking: What Does It Mean for Perrys Customers?

Oct 2, 2026 | Recycling News

Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) is now being introduced across the UK, changing the way waste movements are recorded and tracked. But what does that actually mean for Perrys customers?

The good news is that there is no need for Perrys customers to change anything right now.

What is Digital Waste Tracking?

Waste can pass through several businesses and facilities before it reaches its final destination. The new Digital Waste Tracking system is designed to create a digital record of that journey, making it easier to see where waste has come from, where it is going and what happens to it along the way.

The aim is to improve transparency, support regulatory compliance and help tackle waste crime. Better information should also help identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve segregation and increase recycling efficiency.

When does it come into effect?

Digital Waste Tracking is being introduced in phases.

Phase 1 began on 1 October 2026, and applies to permitted waste-receiving sites in England and Wales. These facilities are required to report incoming waste movements through the new digital service.

Phase 2 begins in October 2027, and brings the wider waste industry into the system, including waste collectors, carriers, brokers, dealers and registered exemption holders. This is the stage that is relevant to Perrys’ own compliance.

What does this mean for Perrys customers?

For now, nothing changes to the way your waste collections are handled.

Perrys does not have to comply with the new digital tracking requirements until October 2027. However, we are already preparing for the changes and working towards reporting compliance ahead of the deadline.

Until October 2027, Perrys will continue using standard paper Waste Transfer Notes for waste movements as normal. As part of our next software rollout, we will also be moving to handheld digital devices used to record collection information (Personal Digital Assistants or PDAs) in early 2027.

So, while the industry is moving towards a more digital way of tracking waste, your Perrys service continues as normal.

We’ll keep you informed of any changes that affect you before they happen.

Why is this a good thing?

Digital tracking should make waste movements easier to follow and records easier to verify. It is designed to reduce the risk of waste being misdescribed, untracked or managed outside regulatory requirements.

For Perrys and our customers, better information could also help identify further opportunities to improve recycling and reduce waste.

We’re already preparing for the change and working closely with our customers and suppliers to make the transition as straightforward as possible.
